What's included in this test?

Omega 6: Omega 3 Ratio

Omega-6 and omega-3 are essential fatty acids required by the body for controlling inflammation, brain development, and regulating blood pressure. Omega-6 is believed to have a pro-inflammatory role in the body, while omega-3 is believed to have an anti-inflammatory role. The ideal ratio between omega-6 and omega-3 is considered to be around 2:1. However, the typical Western diet, which is rich in processed foods and omega-6 processed vegetable oils, often leads to a ratio of over 10:1 in many people.

Omega 3 index

The Omega-3 Index is a measurement that assesses the levels of omega-3 fatty acids, specifically EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), in red blood cell membranes. It is expressed as a percentage of total fatty acids. The Omega-3 Index is considered an important marker of cardiovascular health as omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in reducing inflammation, promoting heart health, and supporting brain function. A higher Omega-3 Index is generally associated with a decreased risk of cardiovascular disease. Regular measurement of the Omega-3 Index can provide valuable information about an individual's omega-3 fatty acid status and help guide dietary and supplementation choices to maintain optimal levels for overall well-being.

Sampling special instructions

Prepare for your Omega-3 and Omega-6 Blood Test by following the instructions included within your test kit. It is recommended to refrain from consuming omega-3 fatty acid supplements or foods rich in omega-3 (such as fatty fish) for at least 48 hours prior to the test. This will help ensure accurate measurement of omega-3 levels in your blood. Additionally, avoid consuming excessive amounts of omega-6 fatty acids in the days leading up to the test. This includes reducing intake of processed foods, vegetable oils (such as corn, soybean, and sunflower oil), and fried foods. Following these instructions will help provide accurate results for assessing your omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acid balance.
