How to understand your blood test results
A result only becomes meaningful when it is interpreted in context. Reference ranges matter, but they are only one part of the picture.
Blood test results are not just about whether something is high or low.
A page of numbers on its own does not tell the full story. A useful interpretation considers the individual result, the laboratory reference range, related biomarkers, your symptoms, your training and, where available, your previous results.
This is particularly important in performance blood testing, where a result may sit within a standard range and still be worth understanding.
Start with a broad baseline

A laboratory reference range is the range the lab uses to show where a result typically sits in a wider population.
If your result sits outside that range, it does not automatically tell us why. If it sits within the range, it does not automatically mean it is irrelevant.
A reference range is useful, but it is not the whole interpretation.
The range provides a frame of reference. It does not replace clinical or performance context.
No marker should be viewed completely in isolation.
A single result may only make sense when looked at alongside related biomarkers.
Ferritin, for example, is more useful when considered alongside haemoglobin, red cell markers, inflammation and the individual’s circumstances. Thyroid markers, hormones and nutritional markers also need to be interpreted as part of a wider pattern.
This is one of the main reasons broad baseline testing is often more useful than a narrow test at the very start.
Trends over time often matter as much as the individual result.
One isolated result gives you a snapshot. Repeated measurements show direction.
A marker can remain inside a reference range but still change meaningfully over time. A ferritin result of 60 µg/L may look very different if your previous result was 110 µg/L than if it was 58 µg/L.
This is why repeat testing can be so useful. It helps distinguish a stable result from a changing one.
Population ranges tell us where you sit against others. Repeat testing tells us what is happening with you.
Recent training and testing conditions can affect the result.
Blood results are influenced by more than biology alone. Hard exercise, dehydration, illness, alcohol, food intake, sleep and some supplements can all affect particular biomarkers.
For athletes, this matters even more. Markers such as creatine kinase, AST and some inflammatory markers can shift after hard training. Hydration status can also change the concentration of blood measurements.
This is why consistency matters when comparing results over time.

Standard laboratory ranges are designed primarily for identifying results that may warrant medical attention. In sport and performance, that is only part of the picture.
IMULAB uses standard laboratory ranges and adds performance context where the evidence is strong enough to support it.
That does not mean redefining disease. It means recognising that a result may still be worth monitoring in an athlete, even when it is not clearly abnormal in a general population sense.
Iron and ferritin
Particularly relevant in endurance athletes and menstruating women, where oxygen carrying capacity and iron stores can influence energy and performance.
Hormones
Best interpreted as a system rather than as isolated numbers, taking account of age, sex, sleep, energy availability, training load and menstrual cycle timing where relevant.
Nutritional markers
Useful not only for identifying low status, but for measuring whether an intervention has actually changed the biomarker.
What should happen after the result?
The next step depends on what the results show and why you tested in the first place.

- 02Some results may support a change in training, nutrition, recovery or supplementation.
- 03Some results may justify a focused retest after an appropriate period.
- 04Some results may need proper medical follow-up rather than self-interpretation.
Blood testing is useful because it gives direction. The value lies in what is done with the information afterwards.
Good interpretation starts with good context. That usually means a baseline first.
