HCG, or human chorionic gonadotropin, is a hormone that is primarily produced by the placenta in pregnant women after implantation of a fertilized egg in the uterus. Its production starts about six days after fertilization and its presence can usually be detected in the blood or urine about 10 days after a missed menstrual period.
